Gummys for your gut – a recipe!
This is a great and delicious way of supporting gut health, particularly for kids. The berries are full of polyphenols which act as food for our gut microbes and the gelatin assists with healing the protective mucosal lining of the gut.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup fresh or frozen raspberries/other berries
- 1/2 cup gelatin
- 1 teaspoon honey (optional)
Method:
Put the gelatin and 1 cup of water into a bowl and allow to bloom by letting it sit for a few minutes to absorb the liquid.
Place the berries in a blender along with 400ml hot water and the bloomed gelatin and blitz to combine.
Pour into a silicone mould or tray and refrigerate for 1-2 hours or until set.
Cut into 1 inch pieces. These can be consumed as-is or cut up and added to yoghurt/muesli/etc.
Variation:
Replace 400ml water with 1 can of coconut cream for a creamy alternative.
Berries, including raspberries, are rich in an amazing plant chemical called polyphenols. Polyphenols have a powerful antioxidant properties and are therefore fantastic for overall health and prevention of disease, but they also have a beneficial effect on the microbes that live in our gut. Polyphenols act as food for our microbes, which helps to support healthy diversity of beneficial species in our gut and therefore important for maintaining good gut health and function.
Gelatin is a also a wonderful food for supporting gut health. It contains all essential amino acids for building and repairing body tissue, including assisting with healing the protective mucosal lining of the gut.
