The skin is the largest organ in our body. It easily absorbs everything that it comes into contact with including chemicals, pesticides, cosmetics, perfumes, personal care products and cleaning products. Many of these products on the market are just full of nasty crap, even those labelled as “natural” or “safe”. Thankfully there are also some great alternatives as well. But how do you know what’s safe and healthy?

Once absorbed through the skin the toxins land in our systemic circulation. Our body has to work incredibly hard to remove the toxins and often they just accumulate in our body. This causes us many health issues and disease. Toxins destroy our healthy gut bacteria (and our digestive function), place a burden on our liver, impact our DNA, cause inflammation and mimic our hormones. Toxins can make us feel pretty damn crappy and although you can’t find out what’s causing your symptoms it may be these guys playing havoc in your body.

How do I know what to use?

Avoiding toxins entirely can be difficult, but just make sensible choices when you can. Is it time to clean out your cupboards? My motto is if it’s not safe to eat, then it’s not safe to put on my skin. There is a brilliant website www.ewg.org that provides simple to follow consumer guides on how to choose safe cleaning, personal care and make-up products. It provides realistic advice on how to minimise exposure to pesticides and toxins and how to understand labels. Check it out!

It’s never too late to start. I can work with you to determine whether your previous exposure to toxins may be causing your health concerns. There is clinical testing that tells me whether you have excess toxins in your body. And there are amazing herbs, supplements and diet interventions that can help your body eliminate toxins and reduce their effects. There’s a reason why they’re called “nasties”!
